Kristen Walla of Aspen was eliminated from the U.S. Women’s Amateur on Thursday, while former University of Denver golfer Stephanie Sherlock won two matches to advance to the quarterfinals.
Walla lost 3 and 1 to Lisa McCloskey of Houston in the round of 32 at Charlotte (N.C.) Country Club.
Sherlock, of Canada, beat Caroline Hedwall of Sweden on the 19th hole in the round of 32 and Kelly Shon of Port Washington, N.Y., 3 and 1 in the round of 16.
Oliver wins USOC honor.
Denver East High School graduate David Oliver has been named the U.S. Olympic Committee male athlete of the month for July. The 2008 Olympic bronze medalist in the 110-meter hurdles tied the American record July 3 and lowered the record by 0.01 of a second two weeks later.
UNC third in preseason volleyball poll.
Big Sky Conference volleyball coaches have picked Northern Colorado for third place in the annual preseason poll, the same spot the coaches predicted the Bears would finish last season. UNC wound up tied for second in the regular season, then won the conference tournament and automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Bears lost four key seniors but get back setter Marissa Hughes, an all-Big Sky second-team selection last season; Ashley Lichtenberg, who had the second- best hitting percentage in the Big Sky; and Kelley Arnold, who had 234 kills in 2009. Portland State and Montana are the co-favorites to win the league.
• Big 12 Conference volleyball coaches ranked Colorado 11th in their annual preseason poll. Outside hitter Karina Garlington of Kansas, formerly of Grandview High School, was named to the preseason all-conference team.
