On Saturday, the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless will host its annual Back to School Health Fair to give immunizations and hearing, dental, and vision screenings to homeless children.
The health fair will be from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Stout Street Clinic, 2100 Broadway, in Denver.
The first 200 children will receive a backpack full of school supplies.
In addition to the immunizations and screenings, dentists will be on-site to give fluoride treatments to children under 3.
A database started last year helps keep the children’s medical records, and this year will include information about the child’s school, so that the clinic can refer to school nurses on any necessary follow up treatments.
Hands-on exhibits, a reading corner, face painters, crafts, free hair cuts and lunch will also be available during the health fair.
The group says the Kaiser Family Foundation estimates 165,000 children in Colorado lack access to health care. The Colorado Coalition estimates that there are 3,000 homeless children and teens under the age of 18 in metro Denver on any given night.
