ATLANTA — Third baseman Chipper Jones said Friday he will report to spring training next year with the Braves as he attempts a comeback from major knee surgery.

Jones, speaking for the first time since the team announced he tore his left ACL and will miss the rest of the season, said he will have surgery on the knee today.

Jones, 38, said now is not the right time to “make a decision to quit.”

Giants acquire Guillen from Royals

SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants acquired outfielder Jose Guillen and received cash considerations from the Royals in exchange for a player to be named.

Guillen was batting .255 with a team-best 16 homers and 62 RBIs when he was designated for assignment Aug. 5.

“We didn’t acquire him to be on the bench,” said manager Bruce Bochy, who plans to use Guillen somewhere in the middle of the batting order.

Pettitte has setback in simulated game

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte had a setback in a simulated game and will join the team today for further evaluations.

Manager Joe Girardi said Pettitte could only push off at 75 percent in a 50-pitch simulated game in Tampa, Fla. Pettitte has not pitched since July 18 because of a strained left groin.

“It didn’t go as well as we wanted,” Girardi said. “He just didn’t feel like it’s completely healed. He did not have full strength. Part of it is he feels a little something and is afraid to let it go. I think he did the right thing by not trying to push it.”
