An intense fire that destroyed a large outdoor pavilion at a Broomfield city park Thursday night has been termed suspicious by investigators from North Metro Fire Rescue.

The fire at Broomfield’s Northmoor Park was first reported to 911 dispatchers at about 9:30 p.m., according to Wendy Forbes, spokeswoman for the fire department.

When firefighters arrived at the scene 1310 Birch St., the pavilion and adjacent restrooms were completely engulfed in flames.

The structures, valued at about $45,000, are a complete loss, said Forbes.

“There is no way they can be salvaged. They are going to have to be torn down,” said Forbes.

Forbes said the fire is being termed “suspicious” because there was nothing that would have been naturally combustible at the scene. There were also no lightning storms in the area Thursday night.

Forbes said a number of witnesses have called with information about activities they observed in the park just prior to the fire.

The area around the pavilion is roped off today due to the instability of the structure.

Persons with information about the fire are asked to call North Metro Fire investigator Lindsey Smith at 720-887-8217, ext. 2226.
