DENVER—The Air Force is looking into an unspecified emergency that prompted an F-16 pilot to jettison two external fuel tanks over Colorado.

The jet landed safely and no injuries were reported in the July 22 incident. The nature of the trouble hasn’t been disclosed.

The tanks were found the next day southeast of Denver.

The F-16 was from the Colorado Air National Guard at Buckley Air Force Base outside Denver.

Maj. Kristin Haley says the initial inquiry will take about 90 days and its finding aren’t public record. She says if the inquiry finds negligence or if damages are above a certain threshold, another investigation would be launched, and its findings are public record.

It wasn’t immediately clear what the dollar threshold was.
