The Breck Epic wants to know one thing: Are you tough enough? If the answer is an emphatic “yes,” well, then maybe they should restate the question. That is, are you tough enough for six stages of backcountry mountain biking spending four to eight hours on course each day at elevations above 10,000 feet? If the answer is still “yes” (less emphatic is acceptable this time), then consider yourself in luck. Because that’s what the Breck Epic is bringing to Breckenridge beginning Sunday, and there are still some spots available for riders capable of backing up the boast. Total ride distance is about 240 miles with 37,000 vertical feet of climbing. If that seems short, remember the altitude and consider that the courses are primarily singletrack designed for top pros to finish in 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 hours each day. If the race is starting to sound less appealing, perhaps the riders’ compound offering camping, medical support, massage, showers, organic food from local farmers, mechanical support and killer coffee will win you back. Adding to the race’s tender side, proceeds from the Epic benefit local open-space initiatives and trail improvements.
