A search for a 24-year-old woman after her purse and cell phone were found on the bank of a pond near her home in Jefferson County turned up a body in the water, but authorities aren’t yet ready to say it’s the missing woman.
“At this point, I’m not even sure yet if it’s a female,” Jefferson County Sheriff’s spokesman Mark Techmeyer said on Tuesday at about 5:30 p.m., an hour after divers found the submerged body near West Ute Avenue and South Carr Street.
The 4-acre pond is part of Massey Draw drainage area adjacent to the Wingate South subdivision, which is west of Wadsworth Boulevard and north of C-470 near Littleton.
The purse and phone were found by someone walking around the pond at about 11:30 a.m., Techmeyer said. They belonged to a woman who lived in the area with her parents. Her parents said they had not seen her in a couple of days but hadn’t reported her missing.
“We brought in police canines who followed her scent from the home to where the items were found,” he said.
