A fast-growing fire started burning on private land Wednesday afternoon about 10 miles north of Maybell in Moffat County, according to the Bureau of Land Management.
The Alkali fire was started by lightning this afternoon and by 8:30 p.m. had consumed 1,000 acres, with high winds pushing flames up to 30 feet high, officials said.
The wind also scattered embers and ignited spot fires.
Fire crews saved a home, but an outbuilding on the ranch was reported to have burned.
Numerous fire agencies in northwest Colorado are fighting the blaze, and road closures are in effect in the area.
