Getting your player ready...

ATLANTA — The Braves bulked up for the pennant chase Wednesday, acquiring first baseman Derrek Lee from the Cubs for three minor-league pitchers.

Atlanta already had Troy Glaus at first base but, in an unexpected move, the team put him on the 15-day disabled list.

General manager Frank Wren wants Glaus to rest his legs for a week, then head to Triple-A Gwinnett to get in some work at his former position, third base.

“It doesn’t get any better,” said Atlanta third baseman Chipper Jones, whose season- ending knee injury sparked the trade. “Outstanding character guy. Outstanding player. Defensively at first base, he’s top notch.”

Lee, 34, has put up disappointing numbers in the final season of his five-year, $65 million contract, hitting .251 with 16 homers and 56 RBIs. He’s also been bothered by a sore back that kept him out of the Cubs’ 5-1 loss to San Diego on Wednesday.

The Cubs acquired right-handers Robinson Lopez and Tyrelle Harris and left- hander Jeffrey Lorick.

Cameron to have season-ending surgery

BOSTON — Red Sox center fielder Mike Cameron will have season-ending surgery to repair a torn abdominal muscle.

Cameron has tried to play through the injury since early in the season. Limited to just 48 games, he hit .259 with four homers with 15 RBIs.

“I put it off a long time,” he said. “It’s time to explore the options of taking care of what I need to do to be ready to play baseball next year. It’s time. It’s just time.”

Footnotes.

Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez was absent from the lineup for the second straight game because of tightness in his left calf.

• The Tigers placed second baseman Carlos Guillen on the 15-day DL because he has a deep bruise on his left knee.

• Rangers third baseman Michael Young is day to day because of a stiff neck.

• The Marlins recalled right-hander Alex Sanabia from Triple-A New Orleans to start tonight in Pittsburgh.

• The players’ union filed a grievance against the Mets and the commissioner’s office, protesting the team’s placement of closer Francisco Rodriguez on the disqualified list since he was injured in a fight at Citi Field. If the case isn’t settled, arbitrator Shyam Das would decide whether the team’s actions were justified. No hearing date has been set.
