Firefighters were battling a fast- growing fire on private land about 10 miles north of Maybell in Moffat County.
According to the Bureau of Land Management, the Alkaki fire was started by lightning Wednesday afternoon and by 8:30 p.m. had consumed 1,000 acres, with high winds pushing flames up to 30 feet high. The wind also scattered embers and ignited spot fires.
Fire crews saved a home, but an outbuilding on the ranch was reported to have burned.
