KEARNEY, Neb.—The University of Nebraska at Kearney has gotten the university regents’ approval to seek membership in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
If accepted by the MIAA, Kearney would leave the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, starting in the 2012-13 school year.
UNK Athletics Director John McBride says his school soon will formally apply to the MIAA, given the regents’ blessing on Tuesday.
The Kearney school has been in the RMAC since 1994. Its 14 schools range geographically from Nebraska to western Colorado and southern New Mexico.
The MIAA’s 12 members are in Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska and include the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Besides UNK, three other schools are in the process of joining the MIAA in 2012.
