AURORA — The City Council has rejected an arbitrator’s recommendation regarding a new contract for firefighters, meaning voters will probably decide the matter in November.

The city and the fire department union were at odds over how pension benefits are paid.

The city wanted to continue the current pension plan, similar to a 401(k), but was concerned about future changes in the market. The union wanted, and the arbitrator recommended, that the firefighters be put under the Fire and Police Pension Association of Colorado.

The council Wednesday rejected the arbitrator’s recommendation, according to union president Randy Rester.Carlos Illescas, The Denver Post
