NEW YORK — Designated hitter Lance Berkman was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday by the Yankees because of a sprained right ankle.

The move is retroactive to Aug. 16, the day after Berkman rolled his ankle while stumbling across first base as he tried to beat a throw in Kansas City, Mo.

The Yankees recalled infielder Eduardo Nuñez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes- Barre, where he was batting .289 and leading the International League with 134 hits.

The Dodgers put starter Vi- cente Padilla on the 15-day disabled list because of a bulging disc in his neck and recalled reliever Travis Schlichting from Triple-A Albuquerque.

• Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia is day to day with a sore left foot, and catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia went on the DL with an infection in his right leg.

• Phillies slugger Ryan Howard (ankle) will start a rehab assignment today with the club’s Class-A affiliate.

• Padres center fielder Tony Gwynn Jr. went on the DL with a broken bone in his right hand.

• The Cardinals acquired third baseman Pedro Feliz from the Astros for minor- league pitcher David Carpenter.
