NEW YORK — Alex Rodriguez’s return to the lineup Tuesday night lasted one at-bat.
Back after missing three games with a left calf strain, the Yankees third baseman likely will miss a few more games. Manager Joe Girardi didn’t rule out a trip to the disabled list.
“I never had a calf situation before so it’s hard to gauge whether I can play through it,” Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez grounded out to third base as the designated hitter leading off the second inning in a 6-0 loss to the Mariners. He did not return because he said he felt a pull in the calf.
“I just felt something on the swing,” he said. “Same thing. I wouldn’t say it’s any worse.”
Pedroia back on DL
BOSTON — Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia returned to the DL with soreness in the foot he broke in late June.
Pedroia spent seven weeks on the DL after he fouled a ball off his left foot June 25 at San Francisco. He played in two minor-league rehab games last weekend, showing no signs of problems. But the 2008 AL MVP experienced significant pain after going 1-for-3 in Wednesday’s 7-5 victory over the Angels and was scratched from Thursday’s lineup.
Footnotes.
The Twins placed infielder Nick Punto on the 15-day DL because of a strained left hamstring and recalled infielder Matt Tolbert from Triple-A Rochester.
• Marlins catcher Ronny Paulino was suspended 50 games after he tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance under Major League Baseball’s drug policy.
• Phillies prospect Tyson Gillies has been charged with possession of cocaine after a June arrest in Florida.
• Athletics outfielder Conor Jackson was placed on the DL for the third time this year, this time because of a lower abdominal strain.
