The octopus that achieved fame by correctly predicting the result of each of Germany’s matches at this year’s World Cup has switched allegiance. Paul, which is English born, has been appointed as an ambassador to England’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup. Paul made his predictions by opening the lid of one of two clear plastic boxes, each containing a mussel and bearing a team flag. But his new role is simply to bring publicity to England’s World Cup bid. “Paul the Octopus is undoubtedly one of the biggest names in football,” former England winger John Barnes said. “Huge numbers of people will follow Paul’s lead and back the bid.”
