COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—The father of JonBenet Ramsey is among the people honoring longtime Colorado Springs police detective Lou Smit, who was 75 when he died last week from cancer.
John Ramsey spoke at Smit’s funeral Friday, recalling that the detective always said he was standing in the victim’s shoes.
Smit was coaxed out of retirement to help investigate the 1996 slaying of Ramsey’s daughter, 6-year-old JonBenet, who was found beaten and strangled in the basement of her parents’ Boulder home. Smit resigned when he felt authorities were wrongly focusing on the girl’s parents.
Smit was credited with helping lock up more than 200 killers, including the man convicted in the 1975 rape and murder of Karen Elisa Grammer, the sister of actor Kelsey Grammer.
