NEW YORK — An injury the Yankees originally thought would cost Alex Rodriguez just a couple of days is going to cost the all-star third baseman a bit more than that.

The Yankees, after initially feeling a stint on the disabled list wouldn’t be necessary for Rodriguez to heal his strained left calf, put A-Rod on the 15-day disabled list Saturday.

“I didn’t want to mess with this, it’s as simple as that,” general manager Brian Cashman. “Let’s give him 15 days to make sure this is behind him.”

In the corresponding roster move, the Yankees promoted right-hander Ivan Nova from Triple-A. Nova, 12-3 with a 2.86 ERA in 23 starts for Scranton, will start Monday night in Toronto.

Two Twins placed on DL

MINNEAPOLIS — The Twins put starter Kevin Slowey and reliever Ron Mahay on the disabled list after both were injured against the Angels.

The Twins recalled starter Nick Blackburn and reliever Anthony Slama from Triple-A Rochester to fill in.

Strasburg leaves in fifth

PHILADELPHIA — Nationals rookie pitcher Stephen Strasburg left his start against the Phillies in the fifth inning with an apparent injury.

Strasburg grabbed his right wrist and shook it after a pitch to Dominic Brown. After a brief conversation with manager Jim Riggleman, he left the game after striking out six in 4 1/3 innings.

Footnotes.

The Dodgers activated Manny Ramirez from the DL and put him in the starting lineup against the Reds. The left fielder missed the last 33 games because of a strained right calf.

• The Phillies activated Ryan Howard from the disabled list, three weeks after the first baseman sprained his left ankle.
