The Erie trustees approved an ordinance late Tuesday night to allow people to drive golf carts on public streets in town.
The trustees voted 4 to 3 to allow the electric vehicles on streets with posted speed limits of 25 mph or less. The ordinance also requires golf cart drivers to have driver’s licenses, be at least 21 years old, and carry liability insurance.
The vote was taken just before midnight.
Proponents tout the electric vehicles as an environmentally friendly alternative to gas-guzzling cars, especially for short around-town trips.
Tuesday’s vote makes Erie the second municipality in Boulder County to allow golf carts on its roads. Lyons passed a similar ordinance last year.
