The parent of a kindergartner at Molholm Elementary School in Lakewood is facing charges after leaving a pistol in a backpack that a child took to school Wednesday.
A teacher was cleaning up and found the gun in the student’s backpack.
The parent has not been identified by Lakewood police but was arrested on suspicion of child abuse and possession of a weapon on school grounds.
The circumstances are still under investigation, said Lakewood police spokeswoman Andrea Joo.
The parent told officers the weapon was inadvertantly stored in the child’s backpack, Joo said.
