Both chic and eco-friendly, the handbags created by Fibre Arts Design Studio are a step above many of the purses typically labeled “green.” That’s because the designer and CEO, Wo Schiffman, is a textile designer first and a handbag designer second. She started the company, based in Menlo Park, Calif., with a strong sense that she wanted to use socially responsible practices, low- carbon-footprint materials, and zero-waste manufacturing processes. Many bags are in natural wools and hand-dyed and ruched silks; some are from recycled materials or remnant fabrics; and all are wear-tested by the women who work at the studio.
