Gunner Wiebe of Aurora was eliminated in the first round of match play at the U.S. Amateur Championship on Wednesday, losing 2 and 1 to Richard Werenski of South Hadley, Mass.

Werenski took the lead with a birdie on the par-5 first hole, and Wiebe, a senior-to-be at the University of San Diego and former standout at Kent Denver, evened the match with a par on No. 7. Werenski responded with a birdie to regain the lead on the par-5 eighth and was 4-up after winning holes 11 through 13 with two birdies and a par.

Rapids announce late starts.

The Rapids announced the team’s final two home games at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City will have later kickoffs. Both games, Oct. 2 vs. D.C. United and Oct. 23 vs. Real Salt Lake, were originally scheduled for 3 p.m. starts and will now start at 7 p.m.

Vonn nominated for sportswoman award.

Lindsey Vonn of Vail is one of 20 athletes nominated for the Women’s Sports Foundation Sportswoman of the Year Award.

Vonn won a gold medal in the downhill and a silver in the the super-G at the Vancouver Olympics. Also nominated were tennis star Serena Williams, WNBA standout Diana Taurasi and USA Softball’s Jennie Finch. Fans can see the entire list and vote at . The winners will be announced Oct. 12 in New York.

Young to play baseball at MSU-Billings.

Outfielder Tucker Young of Gillette, Wyo., signed a scholarship offer to play baseball at Montana State-Billings.

Young helped Campbell County High School to the state title in 2008 and a runner-up finish in 2009.

Hawkins named interim softball coach at Mines.

Kristie Hawkins was named the interim coach for the Colorado Mines softball team.

Hawkins was an assistant the last two seasons under Annie Van Wetzinga, who left to become coach at Upper Iowa. The Orediggers qualified for their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2009 under Van Wetzinga and Hawkins.

Adams State runners favored to repeat.

The Adams State men’s and women’s cross country teams are projected to repeat as NCAA Division II champions, according the the preseason rankings released by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The Grizzly men will be trying for a third straight national title and will face their toughest competition from within the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, according the rankings, which had Western State No. 2 and Colorado Mines No. 3, the places they finished at the NCAAs last year.

The ASC women are bidding for their eighth straight national title. The Western State women were the only other RMAC squad to receive a preseason ranking, at No. 9.
