LAKEWOOD, Colo.—A 27-year-old Colorado man faces several criminal charges after a kindergarten teacher found a loaded semiautomatic handgun in a 4-year-old’s backpack.
Police in Lakewood arrested James Chavez Wednesday on suspicion of child abuse, reckless endangerment and unlawfully carrying a weapon on school property after the gun was found in his daughter’s backpack at Molholm Elementary School.
Chavez told police that he carried the gun for protection and had inadvertently left it in his daughter’s backpack.
Lakewood police spokesman Steve Davis said the teacher discovered the gun while cleaning up just before the end of the school day.
