AIR FORCE ACADEMY — Air Force junior Tim Jefferson likely will get the call to start at quarterback for a second year, after coach Troy Calhoun released the team’s depth chart Monday.

Jefferson and junior Connor Dietz had battled for the starting job through pre-season practice. Dietz will be the backup as the Falcons open their season Saturday against Northwestern State of Louisiana in Falcon Stadium.

Calhoun had withheld his decision at quarterback until the week of the first game while Jefferson and Dietz divided the quarterback position during practice.

Jefferson has played in 20 games going into the 2010, opener. The 6-foot, 200-pound Jefferson from Atlanta, Ga., has piled up 2,144 yards of total offense and accounted for 17 touchdowns, including 10 passing scores. His passing yardage is 1,503 yards, 848 a year ago.

As a freshman in 2008, Jefferson took over the starting assignment after the fifth game of the season. The Falcons were 5-3 in his eight starts, including a 34-28 loss to Houston in the Armed Forces Bowl.

A year ago, Jefferson missed three games during the regular-season with injuries. The Falcons were 7-3 with him as the starter, including a 47-20 victory over Houston in the Armed Forces Bowl.
