LORCA, Spain — American Tyler Farrar, who rides for the Boulder- based Garmin-Slipstream cycling team, won the fifth stage of the Spanish Vuelta, and Philippe Gilbert of Belgium maintained the overall lead.
Farrar capped the 123.5-mile stage from Guadix to Lorca by crossing the finish line ahead of Koldo Fernandez of Spain and Mark Cavendish of Britain. He won in a time of 5 hours, 3 minutes, 36 seconds.
The top of the overall standings did not change as Gilbert maintained his 10-second lead over the Spanish pair of Joaquin Rodriguez and Igor Anton.
Arum’s son is missing
SEATTLE — Nearly two dozen mountaineers and park rangers are searching for the son of Hall of Fame boxing promoter Bob Arum, who’s been missing since a weekend camping trip in the Cascade Mountains.
John Arum was expected to arrive home Sunday after climbing Storm King, a rugged mountain peak about a seven-hour drive from Seattle. Family members grew worried when the 49-year-old environmental lawyer and accomplished hiker did not return.
• Light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal is set to defend his title against Bernard Hopkins in December in Canada.
The 45-year-old Hopkins hasn’t fought since winning a unanimous decision in his long-delayed rematch with Roy Jones Jr. in April.

Sharks reportedly add Niemi
SAN JOSE, Calif. — Antti Niemi, the Chicago Blackhawks goaltender who frustrated San Jose in the Western Conference finals last spring, reportedly has agreed to terms to join the Sharks on a one-year contract for $2 million.
• Sharks CEO Greg Jamison is stepping down from his job running the day-to-day operations of the club.
• The NHL has extended its deadline to Friday for approving Ilya Kovalchuk‘s $100 million, 15-year contract with the New Jersey Devils.
