A father and daughter were caught Monday attempting to pass through security at Denver International Airport with a loaded gun, according to the Denver district attorney’s office.

Officials with the Transportation Security Administration found a .22- caliber handgun inside the girl’s purse at a DIA security checkpoint, according to DA spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough.

James Mueller, 44, is alleged to have given his juvenile daughter the handgun for protection, and she said she forgot it was in her purse.

Mueller faces charges of unlawfully providing or permitting a juvenile to possess a handgun and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. His daughter faces charges of possession of a handgun by a juvenile.

He was released on a $10,000 bond and will appear in Denver County Court on Sept. 17.
