GILLETTE, Wyo.—No gnomes are going to new homes, at least for now.
The city of Gillette had planned to offer more than 100 lawn gnomes for sale at its annual auction Thursday. The gnomes come from the police department evidence locker—confiscated from two teenage girls accused of kidnapping the little guys from people’s yards.
Some folks have claimed their old gnomes.
The remaining gnomes … Well, maybe they’re just painted to look lonely.
The Gillette News-Record reports the city got calls from gnome enthusiasts asking about the sale—and from police in Arvada, Colo., another city where gnomes recently disappeared.
The suspected gnome-snatchers may have spent time in Colorado. Police plan to send gnome photos there to seek out more gnome owners.
The city isn’t selling any gnome-ads until the mystery is solved.
