Government flags are flying at half staff today to memorialize a U.S. Army Chaplain who was killed in Afghanistan by an explosion.

Capt. Dale Goetz, 43, died Aug. 30 in the Arghandab River Valley when an improvised explosive device blasted a military vehicle carrying the Fort Carson-based clergyman.

Goetz is survived by his wife and children, who live in Colorado Springs, and his mother, who resides in Parker.

He was the first Army Chaplain to die in combat since 1970, according to the Associated Press. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. today at Fort Carson.

Serving with Fort Carson’s 4th Infantry Division, Goetz was among five soldiers killed by the bomb.
