DENVER—The campaign treasurer for embattled Colorado gubernatorial candidate Dan Maes has resigned three weeks into the job.
Maes’ campaign confirmed Thursday that treasurer Bob Balink (Buh-leenk’) has quit as volunteer treasurer. Maes spokesman Nate Strauch says that Balink resigned because of a long commute from El Paso County, not because of disagreements with the campaign.
The treasurer started working for the Republican candidate in mid-August.
Maes has struggled to keep his books straight since starting his campaign last year. Last month Maes paid a $17,500 fine for campaign finance violations. The violations included improper donations and mileage reimbursements. Maes blamed the errors on the fact he’s never run for office before.
