ARLINGTON, Texas — Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter is out of the lineup, which manager Joe Girardi says is more because of a long game the previous night than an attempt to help pull his captain out of a prolonged slump.

Jeter went 1-for-7 in a 6-5, 13-inning loss to the Texas Rangers on Friday night. The game took 5 hours, 12 minutes.

Over longer stretches this season, Jeter is 2-for-18 and 7-for-61. His average this season is .260 — 57 points below his career average and his worst by far for a full season.

Saturday night against the Rangers was only the sixth game he hasn’t started this season. He’s been at shortstop for 131 games, five more at designated hitter.

Girardi dismissed age being a factor in the decision. Jeter is 36 and in his 16th season.

Padilla misses start

HOUSTON — Dodgers pitcher Vicente Padilla will not make his scheduled start against the Astros today because of a bulging disc in his neck.

Padilla (6-5) allowed three runs in four innings Monday against Atlanta, a day after he was activated from the disabled list.

Manager Joe Torre said Saturday, “I don’t see him pitching in the foreseeable future.”

Carlos Monasterios (3-5) was to make today’s start.

Beltran sidelined

NEW YORK — Carlos Beltran is out of the Mets’ lineup with tendinitis in his left knee caused by overcompensating during rehabilitation from surgery on his right knee.

Footnotes.

The Athletics have exercised their option to keep manager Bob Geren for the 2011 season. Geren received a one-year contract extension.

• The Rangers have recalled first baseman Chris Davis.
