The true test of a family is when the unthinkable happens.

Holly Holsinger found herself surrounded by a loving and supportive family when her fiance was killed almost three years ago.

Zachary Templeton was a state trooper who died after he was hit while helping a truck driver on Interstate 76. A distracted teenage driver crashed into Templeton and Trooper Scott Hinshaw. Templeton died, and Hinshaw was seriously injured.

Templeton’s death changed the direction of Holsinger’s life.

“Seeing the camaraderie of the State Patrol,” she said, “everybody in blue comes together, and seeing that and seeing the support was huge.”

Holsinger had a degree in criminal justice and was working in probation when she met Templeton. After getting to know him, she realized she wanted to be in law enforcement. After his death, that career change became even more important to Holsinger.

Friday, Holsinger celebrated that dream as a member of the 2010 class of the Colorado State Patrol.

Shortly after receiving her badge, Trooper Holsinger was greeted by Doug and Teresa Templeton, Zachary’s parents.

Together they hugged, cried and thought of Zachary. 9News
