The nonprofit National Grandparents Day Council selected 100-year-old Denver resident Alberta Iliff Shattuck as its 2010 Grandparent of the Year.
Shattuck was inducted in a ceremony Saturday, the day before National Grandparents Day, which has been observed the first Sunday after Labor Day since President Jimmy Carter proclaimed it in 1978.
Shattuck’s family helped settle Denver, co-founded the respected Iliff School of Theology and offered critical early support to the University of Denver. She was a pioneer in her own right, attending the University of Colorado, earning a doctorate and becoming an assistant professor of biochemistry at the medical school.
