It will be no laughing matter when the Rockies open the 2011 season against Arizona at home Friday, April 1. It will be their earliest home opener.
In a change designed to get the World Series over in October, the start of the major-league season has been moved up to Thursday, March 31. In another change, the season will end midweek — Wednesday, Sept. 28 — instead of on a Sunday.
Let’s hope the “fools” on April Fools’ Day aren’t hearty Rockies fans suffering through snow and cold. But chances are, with an average temperature of 58 degrees on this day in Denver — according to MSN.com — it will be cold, if it’s not snowed out. The record high was 79 degrees in 2004.
According to the National Weather Service, on April 1, 1945, snow began falling in Denver and didn’t stop for 51 hours, totaling nearly 11 inches.
Can you say SNOWBALL FIGHT!!!
