Carlie Needles — a ThunderRidge High School point guard who is a top-100 prospect nationally in girls basketball, according to ESPN and Scout.com — made a pledge to play for the University of Florida.
“The last step really was to just go see it,” Needles said Tuesday. “It was awesome, the feel of the campus. The city is just such a college town, and it really feels like a home away from home.
“They’re a real family.”
Needles averaged 14.1 points, 4.2 assists, 2.9 steals and 1.5 rebounds last season. She has been a starter for the Grizzlies since she was a freshman.

CU golfers win CSU tournament.
The Colorado women’s golf team won the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic at the Ptarmigan Country Club in Fort Collins, defeating California by two strokes.
“I wanted a win, but I was happier with the heart we showed,” CU coach Anne Kelly said.
Emily Talley, a junior, led CU with a runner-up performance. She finished two strokes behind tournament champion Kayla Mortellaro of Idaho.
It’s the first team title for CU since the 2008 Texas State Challenge. The Buffs’ team total (1-over-par 852) ranks No. 2 in school history behind a 12-under performance at the Ptarmigan in 2008. Talley’s three- round, 7-under 209 total tied CU records for fewest strokes and most strokes below par in a tournament.
Colorado State (877) finished sixth. Wyoming (919) was 16th, and Northern Colorado (940) finished 17th.
Big Sky salutes UNC goalie.
Northern Colorado’s Kirstin Salminen, a junior goalkeeper from Lynden, Wash., was named the Big Sky Conference women’s soccer defensive player of the week.
In two road games, Salminen allowed just one goal on 12 shots for a save percentage of .917.
It’s the fourth time this season a UNC player has been selected Big Sky player of the week.
The Bears are off to a 5-2-1 start.
