The No. 1 spot in Class 5A volleyball is not safe this season. Tuesday, it was Chaparral’s turn to fall.
The Wolverines, who took down No. 1 Ponderosa in the season’s first week, fell to No. 10 Grandview 25-16, 29-31, 25-18, 25-18 yesterday.
It was the first loss of the season for Chaparral, which came into Tuesday 8-0.
The turning point in the match was the pivotal third game. The Wolverines carried the momentum from a draining Game 2 win — 31-29 — and jumped out to a 9-4 lead before Grandview coach Patty Childress called a timeout to settle her team. The Wolves responded with six-straight points to take 10-9 lead that would turn into a 25-18 Grandview win.
It seemed to suck the air out of the gym.
Alex Reid led Grandview (2-1) with 19 kills, while Morgan Gradishar added 10.
Nicole Dalton had 19 kills for Chaparral. Her sister, Karlie, finished with nine.
