DENVER—Colorado GOP gubernatorial candidate Dan Maes says he was fired by the police department in Liberal, Kansas after he was asked to report on a gambling ring and then accused of associating with bad characters.
In an exclusive interview with The Associated Press, Maes said he discovered the gambling ring when he visited the home of his girlfriend’s parents in 1985 and saw ledgers and recording equipment.
Maes said he told his superiors about the suspected gambling and they dismissed it as a trivial matter. However, he says he was later asked by investigators from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation to report on the gambling.
Liberal’s police chief has refused to discuss Maes’ performance. Calls to the department weren’t immediately returned Wednesday.
