DENVER—The U.S. Department of Agriculture has declared Fremont County as a natural disaster area after a freeze damaged the apple crop.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said Thursday that the freeze occurred between April 30 and May 3 and prevented farmers from being able to harvest the crop.
The disaster designation makes farmers eligible to apply for aid from the Farm Service Agency. Farmers in contiguous counties can also apply.
The contiguous counties are Chaffee, Custer, El Paso Park, Pueblo, Teller and Saguache (suh-WAHCH’).
