SEATTLE — Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton received two cortisone shots this week to help relieve the pain from bruised ribs on his left side.

Hamilton took some swings Tuesday, but was shut down due to recurring pain. He then received two shots Wednesday to ease the discomfort he has felt since he collided with the outfield wall in Minnesota on Sept. 4.

Manager Ron Washington said Friday he hopes the shots take effect before the Rangers leave Seattle on Sunday night and Hamilton can begin baseball-related activities by the time they get to Oakland for a four-game series beginning Thursday.

“In 48 hours, we’ll know something, Washington said. “That means by the time we get out of here, maybe he can start doing something in Anaheim. We’ll know. Right now, if I said anything, it would only be speculation.”

Zimmer fits into Boston Hall

BOSTON — The Red Sox Hall of Fame has five new members — Tommy Harper, Jimmy Piersall, John Valentin, Eddie Kasko and former Boston manager and Rockies assistant Don Zimmer.

Zimmer, who was Joe Torre’s bench coach with the Yankees, said he heard from his former boss about 90 minutes before the enshrinement.

Torre told him he was going to step down after the season as the Dodgers’ manager.

“He said if I was going into the hall of fame, he was quitting,” Zimmer said with a laugh.

Span out
