BOULDER — A man who stabbed a University of Colorado freshman on campus has been deemed not guilty by reason of insanity and has been committed to a state mental hospital.
Kenton Astin slashed the student in the throat on the first day of classes outside University Memorial Center in 2007. The victim, Michael Knorps, recovered and still attends CU. Authorities said Knorps did nothing to provoke the attack.
After a three-hour trial Friday, Boulder District Judge Gwyneth Whalen determined Astin not guilty by reason of insanity. The Daily Camera reported that Astin was committed to the Colorado Mental Health Institute in Pueblo until doctors decide he’s no longer a danger.
