Potty mouth.
“How about bringing to light, as if it isn’t obvious to everyone else, how foulmouthed and unprofessional Broncos coach Josh McDaniels is during a game? Against Jacksonville, every time the television cameras were on him, McD was letting loose another tirade. A farsighted lip reader with cataracts could have seen the profane language McDaniels was using. If NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is coming down hard on players’ conduct, how about coaches? You used to be able to watch NFL games as a family without worrying. Now, not so much.”
Dan, Centennial
Kiz: We can only hope the ears of Broncos tight end Richard Quinn have sufficiently recovered from the third-degree blistering given him by McDaniels in time to play in the home opener.
Nobody will mistake McD for Miss Manners. But there’s something greater at risk here. In separate interviews on 1510 AM and 93.7 FM with me last week, former Broncos greats Karl Mecklenburg and Bill Romanowski suggested McDaniels needs to act more like a CEO on the sideline. It’s wiser to let a position coach handle the individual criticism, said Meck. Romo added that McDaniels could lose his team if his tirades become a habit.
Rockin’ our world.
“Mark, you gave a multiple home run performance with your column titled ‘Hey, Broncos, it’s a Rockies town.’ The Rox certainly deserve top billing over any other sports story in town. The Broncos are hard to watch, especially with McDaniels and his antics on the sideline. He’s like a 4-year-old brat who didn’t get his Gummi Bears. These are exciting times for the Rockies, as well as for Troy Tulowitzki, Carlos Gonzalez and Ubaldo Jimenez.”
Neil, Greenwood Village
Kiz: Here’s something to chew on with your Sunday brunch. Meaning no disrespect to Gonzalez, but the real MVP of the Rockies is Tulowitzki.
Marooned with morons.
“Hey Mike: Get a life, bro. The Rockies will never replace the Broncos as No. 1 in Denver. A few bad seasons for the Broncos and you’re already trying to end their special place with baseball, after the Rockies have had three great seasons in their history? If and when the Broncos start winning games, you’ll realize what a moron you are! Moron!”
David, Denver
Kiz: Need to share with readers one amusing tidbit about this e-mail exchange with David. He apologized for mistakenly calling me Mike, but not for calling me a moron. Those are my peeps. Gotta love ’em.
Portis’ comments mild?
“I just had to write and share my opinion about the NFL’s response to Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis’ comments on TV Azteca reporter Ines Sainz. I never agreed with the policy of allowing female reporters in a male locker room. Are there any female teams allowing male reporters in a locker room? And what is with the NFL’s puritanical and unrealistic ethics policies? Some elements of America want to put a person in stocks for speaking the truth! Portis’ comments were mild, slightly humorous and certainly not offensive.”
Pete, Wind River, Wyo.
Kiz: OK, you trying to get the PC Police to raid Kickin’ It Headquarters? I love my man Portis, but what he said was dumber than the crude jokes you heard in middle school. Know what’s funny, though? Sainz forced us to re-examine gender issues. Or did she remind us how the line between journalism and entertainment has been blurred by the NFL? It was wrong for the New York Jets to disrespect Sainz on the job. But when Sainz unabashedly promotes her own sex appeal and conducts flirtatious interviews with players at the Super Bowl, it’s also difficult to respect her as a serious journalist.
Walking in Walker’s shoes too much for current stars
And today’s parting shot declares that we all simmer down about the Triple Crown hype surrounding CarGo and the Rockies.
“Like other Colorado writers and broadcasters, Kiz, you seem to forget that the current Mr. Five Tool couldn’t carry Larry Walker’s jock for any of those five skills.”
Paul, Boulder
