LAS VEGAS, N.M.—A resolution opposing low-altitude Air Force flights over northern New Mexico and southern Colorado is being drafted by city officials in Las Vegas, N.M.
Mayor Alfonso Ortiz says he expects the resolution will pass.
Meanwhile, organized opposition to the proposal also has formed in Taos, where city public relations director Cathy Connelly says the area attracts tourist who want peace and quiet.
In Las Vegas, N.M., the city plans a special council meeting to consider the resolution before Cannon Air Force Base’s Oct. 4 deadline for public comment.
Under the proposal, Cannon pilots would avoid flying low near airfields, towns and wilderness areas.
Cannon wants its planes to fly as low as 200 feet with the majority of the training taking place after dusk on weekdays.
