Surf’s up! Or it will be March 5 when the Beach Boys hang 10 for Saturday Night Alive.

Sharon Magness Blake and Ernie Blake, who engineered country superstar Garth Brooks’ appearance at NightShine, the 2010 Denver Health gala, are chairing this benefit for the Denver Center for the Performing Arts and made the entertainment announcement on Wednesday, when plans for SNA 31 were launched at a reception held at Mangia Bevi in Greenwood Village.

They also said that U.S. Bank president Hassan Salem and his wife, Sheila, are chairing the corporate committee and that Ryta and Steve Sondergard are the auction coordinators. The Sondergards will chair SNA in 2012.

Tickets (303-446-4815) are $375, $750 (these include an overnight stay at Hotel Teatro and Sunday-morning brunch at Restaurant Kevin Taylor) and $1,250 (the bonus at this level is an exclusive meet- and-greet with the Beach Boys). Proceeds go to Arts in Education, a DCPA outreach serving 50,000 children annually.

Art is life.

Who splurges on art these days? Friends of Project Angel Heart, that’s who.

The ninth edition of Art for Life brought a crowd of 550 to Artwork Network, a gallery on Santa Fe Drive, where 100 pieces donated by a host of local painters and sculptors went on the auction block, fetching a grand total of $60,000.

Guests at the interactive happening enjoyed watching Laurie Maves create the colorful “Poppies for You” while a host of the city’s top chefs put the finishing touches on their own tasty creations, at stations set up throughout the gallery.

The painting that brought the highest price ($1,280) was “Denver Streets,” by Kim English; the greatest number of bids were for Bill Starke’s “Skydiver.” Plein air artist Cheryl St. John’s “Coffee Break” was chosen for the event’s commemorative poster.

Project Angel Heart was founded in 1991 to prepare and deliver nutritious “meals with love” — at no cost — for adults and children coping with life- threatening illness. Enough money was raised at Art for Life to pay for 100,000 of the 415,000 meals that Project Angel Heart staff and volunteers will bring to 1,850 clients this year.

Upcoming fundraisers are the first Pie in the Sky, a Thanksgiving-themed pie sale with tasty creations available for purchase between Oct. 15 and Nov. 15, and A Taste for Life, a walkabout supper set for Nov. 4.
