Two men removing scrap metal from charred home sites in the Fourmile Canyon burn area have been arrested by Boulder County Sheriff’s deputies.
The men, Cesar Antonio Ayala, 20, of Longmont, and Jorge Salgado, 35, of Lafayette, are being held at the Boulder County Jail on suspicion of burglary and felony theft, according to a media release.
At about 8:55 a.m. sheriff’s deputies were sent to the 5400 block of Sunshine Canyon on a report of two men removing scrap metal from destroyed home sites, the sheriff’s office said.
The suspects were contacted on Sunshine Canyon Drive and taken into custody without incident.
The sheriff’s office has received “several” reports of people taking scrap metal from burn sites, the release said.
“Sheriff Joe Pelle would like to remind the public that the homes, even though destroyed, are still private property and any scrap metal or other property located thereon still belongs to the homeowner,” the release said. “Anyone contacted removing anything from private property in the burn area, without proper authorization, will be arrested.”
