KEY WEST, Fla.—A 57-year-old Colorado man died after he surfaced in a panic while scuba diving off Key West.
Police say William Rhoton of Briggsdale, Colo., was diving with his wife in 25 feet of water Thursday afternoon. He surfaced after 40 minutes. His wife told investigators he appeared to be panicky and was coughing and gagging.
He was not breathing when crew members on the dive boat pulled him aboard. They performed CPR and summoned the Coast Guard, which took him ashore. Paramedics took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy will be performed.
