TELLURIDE, Colo.—A 30-year-old man has died from injuries after he was caught in a rock slide while hiking in southwestern Colorado.

San Miguel County Coroner Robert Dempsey tells The Denver Post that John Arthur Merrill of Cortez was climbing El Diente Peak in the San Juan Mountains when he was injured. Another hiker saw the accident and ran to help, but Merrill was dead.

A helicopter flew to the site at about 13,500 feet to recover Merrill’s body Monday. Dempsey says Merrill’s dog survived the rock slide and was rescued from the mountain.
