GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—A grand jury will weigh criminal charges for a state trooper who fatally shot a man at his home in Mesa County.
District Attorney Pete Hautzinger announced the decision Monday.
The State Patrol says 31-year-old Jason Alan Kemp was shot after an “exchange” with a trooper. Kemp was suspected of being involved in a traffic accident.
Witnesses told the Daily Sentinel that troopers pounded and kicked on Kemp’s front door. He reportedly refused to open it, telling troopers to get a search warrant. One witness says Kemp was shot after troopers fired pepper spray through a small opening in the door.
A law enforcement team investigated the shooting for Hautzinger, who called it the most difficult and troubling case the team has handled.
