Deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office are keeping an eye on several school bus stops along C-470 after a bear was spotted wandering in the area.

Jacki Kelley, a spokesperson with the sheriff’s office, says their dispatchers have received quite a few phone calls about the bear from residents in the area Wednesday morning. She says the bear was apparently first spotted by commuters on C-470 near Wadsworth.

Kelley says the Colorado Division of Wildlife is not expected to respond and they are planning on letting the bear wander, for now. They have, however, assigned a number of deputies to help escort students to bus stops in the area, to ensure their safety.

Generally the bears return safely to the nearby Chatfield State Park or foothills, without any help from humans.
