A woman remained in serious condition at Denver Health Medical Center on Wednesday, one day after a steel beam smashed through the windshield of her sport utility vehicle.

The unidentified woman was driving north on Interstate 25 near West Alameda Avenue when the accident occurred about 3:30 p.m.

Denver police said she had stopped in heavy traffic behind a semi that had a long beam extending beyond the truck bed.

A car hit the rear of her SUV, pushing it into the beam. The woman suffered serious head injuries.

Police said the beam was marked with a red flag. The investigation continues, and no charges have been filed.

The crash closed most lanes of northbound Interstate 25 for hours. The Denver Post
