With Colorado leaving the Big 12 after this season, The Denver Post is taking a look at the Buffs’
history with its opponents this season.
Despite amassing 575 yards in offense and scoring points on its first five possessions, No. 21 Colorado needed an overtime defensive stop to nip unranked Missouri 42-35 on the road and keep alive the Buffaloes’ hopes at winning the Big 12 North title.
CU tailback Chris Brown, the nation’s leading rusher, carried 35 times for 211 yards. He scored what proved to be the winning points on a 1-yard touchdown run in overtime as the Buffs got the ball first in the extra period.
Missouri’s overtime drive was stopped when CU freshman safety J.J. Billingsley forced Missouri receiver Darius Outlaw to fumble on a third-and-10 crossing pattern.
Colorado (7-3, 5-1 Big 12) also got 119 yards rushing from Bobby Purify and jumped to a 20-7 halftime lead. But Missouri (4-6, 1-5) scored a pair of touchdowns in both the third and fourth quarters to force overtime. CU quarterback Robert Hodge threw for 203 yards, including six completions for 118 yards to Derek McCoy.
Colorado would go on to earn its second straight Big 12 North title with closing victories over Iowa State and Nebraska. The Buffs lost 29-7 to Oklahoma in the Big 12 championship game and then fell 31-28 in overtime to Wisconsin in the Alamo Bowl.
