BURLINGTON, Vt.—Matt Donovan and Drew Shore scored two goals each Friday as Denver rallied to beat Vermont 5-3 in the men’s college hockey season opener for both teams.

Stacey Wahsontiio scored all three goals for Vermont.

Wahsontiio had a pair of goals, the last at 6:08 of the second period, to stake Vermont to a 2-0 lead. But Shore answered on the power play and Donovan netted the next two goals against Rob Madore to put the Pioneers up for good. Madore had 15 saves.

Wahsontiio scored at 17:50 of the third to pull the Catamounts within a goal, but Shore added and empty-net goal with 32 seconds left.

Vermont outshot Denver 30-20, but Pioneers goalie Adam Murray made 27 saves.
