Firefighters built a perimeter Saturday around the Wadsworth Ridge fire that flared up Friday night and covered about 250 acres.

Additional crews were called in about 11 p.m. Friday when the grass- and brush-fueled blaze quickly grew from 10 acres to more than 200, said Michelle French, spokeswoman for West Metro Fire Rescue.

“It jumped considerably,” French said. “It’s in very rocky terrain on the hogback.”

The fire is in Jefferson County, near the Douglas County line close to Waterton Canyon and South Wadsworth Boulevard. The Lockheed Martin plant is nearby.

After about 60 firefighters built a fire line around the blaze, they let the fire begin to burn itself out, she said.

“Our goal is to not allow it to jump the perimeter,” French said.

West Metro Fire Rescue received a number of 911 calls because of the visible smoke. The fire has not burned any homes. No firefighters have been injured. The cause of the wildfire is under investigation, French said.
